Assistant Manager - Risk and Compliance at Mwanga Hakika Bank

Purpose of the Role
To ensure that all activities within MHB are carried out in compliance with regulatory requirements, including the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework, and internal risk and compliance policies. The role supports effective risk control, strengthens internal processes, and helps protect the MHB from operational and regulatory risks while maintaining smooth day-to-day operations.

Summary of the key duties and responsibilities
Conducting internal reviews and audits and providing review, challenge, and recommendations to the Business Owners with respect to control weaknesses and risk exposures.

- Assist in the implementation of the risk and compliance program through analyzing, summarizing, and presenting data in a meaningful way to stakeholders, ensuring key issues and messages are communicated concisely and effectively.
- Produce timely and accurate monthly (and ad hoc) reports to HOD and Management.
- Implement an agreed program of regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure adequate standards of risk governance and policy compliance.
- Identify and assess key risks, developing mitigation strategies facing the bank, considering both financial and non-financial.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory obligations whilst taking a commercial and practical approach to risk-based challenges and offering appropriate solutions.
- Develop, lead, and motivate the Risk and Compliance team to maximize effectiveness.
- Ensure senior management remains informed of regulatory, legislative,e and best practice changes and their obligations under these changes and how they impact the Bank.
- Providing support, education, and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organization.
- Provision of proactive and practical regulatory advice to staff across all functions to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Identify compliance issues that require follow-up or investigation.
- Maintain documentation of compliance activities, such as complaints received or investigation outcomes.
- Discuss/communicate emerging compliance issues with management or employees.
- Prepare management reports regarding risk and compliance matters.
- Design or implement improvements in communication, monitoring, or enforcement of compliance standards.
- Review or modify policies or operating guidelines to comply with changes to environmental standards or regulations.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to staff reporting to you.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Participate in new product or business developments, significant change processes, and complex trade reviews by performing risk assessments.
- Provide input on valuation and risk measurement models for various trading products (e.g., Value at Risk).
Key Competencies required and Academic background
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s in Banking and Finance, law, finance, business administration, or related field. A certified risk/compliance professional is an added advantage.
Required Experience:
- At least 4 years of experience in risk and compliance or an internal auditing role in banking.
- Broad knowledge of banking products and their associated risks.
- Familiarity with current and evolving regulatory requirements, translating them into actionable risk framework initiatives.
