Orkeeswa School’s Art Program consists of the visual arts, film and photography, music, drama and creative writing. In 2016-2017, we made a significant investment in our Arts Program by creating a dedicated studio space on campus equipped with high-quality resources and materials, offering more consistent art classes to our students and building an arts curriculum. Our students are incredibly creative and passionate about their work as artists. We are looking for a full-time volunteer Art Teacher (short term and/or long term) to support their growth and continue the development of our arts curriculum.

ART TEACHER

Based in Monduli, Tanzania

Orkeeswa School is looking for a full-time Art Teacher to lead our Arts Program.

The Art Teacher role entails:

  • Teaching regular visual art classes

  • Working with individual students to develop their art practice

  • Contributing to the development of our arts curriculum

  • Managing Orkeeswa’s art studio and materials

  • Overseeing Orkeeswa’s Music and Drama programs

Preferred Skills / Experience:

  • Education / Experience within the field of visual arts or a related creative field

  • A passion for working with youth

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent communication skills

• Assisting and executing on priorities for student interviews, transcriptions, photo labeling and organizing, and other administrative support needs for the Communications Team

• Collaborate and assist with execution of the Scholarship Program communications calendar and strategy, including drafting sponsor update emails, leading student letterwriting workshops, and developing engaging student-focused stories and updates

Orkeeswa School is looking for an experienced, hard-working, and passionate Activities Assistant to join our team in Tanzania, East Africa.

We are looking for an energetic volunteer to assist with the Extra-Curricular Activities Program at Orkeeswa School. This person must be incredibly organized, creative and collaborative.

Specific responsibilities include assistance with:

  • Organize and implement daily after-school activities for over 270 students (6th-12th Grade)

  • Organize and train teachers and peer leaders to lead activities

  • Plan and organize events, such as Spelling Bee, Chess Tournament, Math Contest, Orkeeswa Idol, etc.

  • Organize and oversee weekly after-school clubs, including monitoring club effectiveness and student engagement

  • Assist with the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the Activities Program, including tracking student involvement, opportunities offered, and impact

Preferred Skills / Experience:

  • Degree in Education, Organizational Leadership or a related field

  • At least two years of experience in coaching, leadership, or working with youth

  • A passion for working with youth

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent communication skills

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM INTERN

Orkeeswa School is looking for an intern to support the development of our Life Skills curriculum.

Orkeeswa’s Life Skills program aims to equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary for them to make positive, healthy decisions in their lives today and in the future. We are in the process of developing a seven-year long Life Skills curriculum that will become the core of our program, integrated into the many aspects of an Orkeeswa students experience at school and in their community. Through this curriculum, students should be able to: understand important aspects of their own personal health, as well as develop awareness of public health challenges in their community; develop and articulate their own personal philosophies and values, and learn how to enact them in their lives; practice and obtain hard and soft skills necessary to maneuver the current world as leaders and active members of the Orkeeswa community, including developing skills in media literacy, problem solving, communication, leadership and resilience.

Volunteers are expected to commit to either 3-6 months or 18-24 months. There is no fee to volunteer with us, but volunteers are expected to cover their own expenses to get to Tanzania and the necessary Visa and processing fees. Volunteers that commit to a longer-term position will be eligible for a living stipend to cover basic expenses such as food and local travel. Shared housing is available for volunteers.
