Position Summary
The Interventions and Clinical Trials Department conduct trials on drugs, diagnostics and vaccines for malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. Also pioneers multiple innovative ways to assess vaccine candidates through malaria challenge studies with infectious sporozoites. It also providing technical support in other countries to start and implementing clinical trials.
The Research officer will support Project Manager and the research team in managing documents, contracts and supplies, and provide input regarding legal and regulatory issues that governs the conduct of the clinical trial in Tanzania. The research officer will work very closely with the Project Manager and other Administrators to ensure efficient implementation of the projects. To facilitate PIs interest in conducting Controlled Human Infection Studies, Research officer will work with IHI community liaison officers, ethical and regulatory authorities to assess the need to develop ethical and regulatory framework that will inform the review of such protocols in the future.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist PM in development and submission of study documents and reports to IRB and Regulatory authorities.
  • Assist PM and PI to review project details, including protocols, study reports and study budgets, for planned studies.
  • Support study team members with contract development and review, and liaising with IHI Grants and Contracts department to facilitate legal reviews and creation of legal study required documents (MTA, DTA, CTA etc.).
  • Support PM in maintaining study compliance with Institutional Review Board, International and local regulations.
  • Work with community liaison officers, Ethical and Regulatory authorities to assess the need of developing ethical and regulatory framework for Controlled Human Infection studies.
  • Assist PM in tracking, managing and coordinating study supplies in liaison with the administrators and laboratory team.
  • Enters protocol specific data into required IRB and regulatory systems.
  • Assists research team members in assessing and optimizing project workflows.
Qualification and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a science with combination of experience in administrative activities or Bachelor’s degree in administrative studies with experience in health research, preferably clinical trials.
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to work in a clinical or research environment. Demonstrated ability to understand medical terminology.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, maintain confidentiality and remain focused in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to be meticulous with details.
  • Demonstrated impeccable interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team and independently. Demonstrated professional appearance and manner as well as an excellent attendance record.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills with Excel and Word.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.

Position Summary
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is looking for Laboratory Technologists to fill vacant positions in the Interventions and Clinical Trials Department in Bagamoyo.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support all scientific functions in the immunology laboratory, including planning, reviewing, documenting and reporting matters related to study specific immunology activities.
  • Coordinate linkages between laboratories, clinical team and project manager
  • Make sure that all safety procedures are adhered to when collecting, labeling and storing all laboratory specimens.
  • Ensure that laboratory data including laboratory findings are recorded as per protocol and stored in appropriate box files.
  • Archive all the study samples following laboratory information management system for easy tracing.
  • Perform routine tests in assigned area of the laboratory as per current SOP.
  • Ensure specimens collected and received are documented or managed properly before analysis.
  • Make sure that all safety procedures are adhered to when collecting, labeling and storing all laboratory specimens.
  • Ensure that laboratory data including laboratory findings are recorded as per protocol and stored appropriate box files.
  • Perform isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), separation and storage of serum and plasma.
  • Assist in hematological and clinical chemistry sample analysis.
  • Document and report protocol deviations and implement CAPA for the reported deviations.
  • Perform malaria antibody ELISA, Intracellular cytokine staining, and ELISPOT assays.
  • Participate in scientific discussions and project related meetings; and maintaining inventories for stored samples, reagents and lab materials.
  • Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the PI/ Lab Manager
Qualification and Experience
  • Degrees in laboratory sciences/biotechnology/immunology.
  • Previous experience or familiarity with immunological assays.
Skills and Competencies
  • Immunological laboratory analysis.
  • Ability to follow and adhere to existing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to deal effectively with clinicians, study participants, administrators, auxiliary personnel, regulators, monitors and sponsors.
  • Knowledge of good clinical practice, GCLP and regulatory procedures pertaining to clinical trials in Tanzania and globally.
  • Good communication skills and team work.
  • Excellence in using Microsoft office (word, excel, power point and access Excellent organizational skills to independently manage work flow.
  • Ability to prioritize quickly and appropriately.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.

Position Summary
The research officer will be working under Environmental and Ecological Sciences Department which focus on the ecology and transmission of infectious diseases through developing and testing of surveillance and control measures, mosquito ecology and control, water sanitation and hygiene research. Specifically, the research officer will be working in the ITB Project based in Dar es Salaam branch, conducting research activities on mosquito borne diseases and their surveillances.
Duties and Responsibilities.
  • To conduct researches based on mosquito borne diseases and its surveillance.
  • Report on progress and outcomes of the projects at the end of every month by way of electronic or printed reports.
  • Meet Minimum Performance standards required for Research Officer
    1. A minimum of 2nd authored article in a recognized peer reviewed journal per year
    2. Once concept development or participate in proposal development and
    3. Collaborative attitude.
  • Present research findings at least twice a year at weekly thematic group meetings and at least once at a national conference during the course of the project.
  • Liaise with the community, government and other stakeholders as required.
  • Undertake at least one professional development opportunity in grant writing, paper writing or data analysis during the course of the project.
  • Seek support from PI and other senior scientist to apply for a grant to support master’s program.
  • Assist with any other duties as directed by project investigator.
Qualification and Experience
  • Holder of Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or Micro-Biology or any other related field.
Skills and Competencies
  • Familiarity with different assays performed in the laboratory for example ELISA, PCR, Electrophoresis, Microbiological analysis, and Parasites identification.
  • Understanding Good Laboratory Practices that may result into availability of quality laboratory data Familiarity with researches conducted at IHI based on malaria vector control.
    • Mosquito identification, collection and rearing
    • Identification of different mosquito trap: CDC Light trap, pit trap, resting buckets, MET etc.
    • Conducted different insecticide testing: Cone bioassay, tunnel testing and bottle bioassay etc.
    • Interpretation of results obtain from PCR reaction.
  • Malaria diagnosis using MRDT strips and microscopic blood slides.
  • Extraction of genetic materials (DNA and RNA) from living organisms.
  • Research proposal and report writing.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, STATA, R Studio and Internet).
