The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) is a non-profit, autonomous international agricultural research center with its headquarters in Taiwan and five regional offices worldwide. World Vegetable Center conducts research and development programs that contribute to realizing the potential of vegetables for healthier lives and more resilient livelihoods. For more information, please visit our website: www.avrdc.org

INNOVET Project World Vegetable Center is implementing a one-year project titled ‘Innovations in Informal Markets for Safe Vegetables in Tanzania’ (INNOVET). This project uses a market-based one intervention project model that combines postharvest best practices and branding to improve the safety and quality of fresh vegetables in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. The project will offer training in postharvest management and pilot a safe value chain model. The model will involve sourcing safe vegetable products from farmers and using safer technologies for packaging, transportation, and retail display. A quasi-experimental design with treatment (safe) and control (traditional) value chains will be used to assess the innovation’s impact. At least two actors will be targeted for data collection at each value chain stage: farm, sorting and grading, transportation, and retailing, making a total of 20 observations (10 from each value chain). Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire to capture outcomes such as product quality, losses, costs, revenues, consumer demand, vendor perceptions, and value chain bottlenecks. Lab analysis will be done to measure microbial contamination, such as E. coli and Salmonella. Baseline data will be collected, followed by bi-weekly data collection for three months. We are seeking a data analyst to support data management, analysis, and interpretation.

Key duties of the research fellow

  1. Support design, development, and management of project data collection tools and databases.
  2. Manage baseline and bi-weekly survey datasets, including data entry, cleaning, validation, and storage.
  3. Conduct rigorous statistical analysis to compare treatment (safe) and control (traditional) value chains.
  4. Analyze project indicators, including product quality, postharvest losses, costs, revenues, consumer demand, vendor perceptions, and value chain bottlenecks.
  5. Integrate and analyze laboratory microbial results alongside survey data.
  6. Support the interpretation of the results on the effectiveness of the project intervention.
  7. Prepare data summaries, visualizations, and technical reports and presentations for project stakeholders.
  8. Support monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities within the project.
  9. Support other projects as needed.
