CLIMATCH STUDY

The Institute is collaborating with Rigshospitalet (Danish National Hospital) and Tanzania Meteorological Agency and other partners to conduct a study investigating the long-term effects of climate change on non-communicable diseases (CLIMATCH Study). The Institute is inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following positions.

JOB POSITION: PhD FELLOW – NCDs TRACK (2 POSTS)

A PhD fellow will be expected to write a PhD study proposal and submit thesis within 36 months of PhD registration at any reputable local University. The selected candidate will be expected to write PhD proposal in the area related to the main study which may include an investigation of the effects of climate change on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, mental health or other related chronic conditions. 

REPORTING: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To assist in coordination of implementation of the CLIMATCH study as a deputy coordinator. This will include;
    1. Preparation of ethics applications, standard operating procedures and field recruitment plans;
    2. Recruitment of study participants and data collection in the field;
    3. To represent the study in national and international platforms;
  2. To undertake a PhD project on the subject related to the main funded project and submit thesis within 36 months; and
  • To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE:

  1. A Medical Doctor from a recognized University with full medical registration from Tanganyika Medical Council;
  2. Master’s Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health (Epidemiology track), Clinical Research, Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Immunology and Molecular Biology or related disciplines from a recognized University;
  3. Experience of writing and publishing scientific work;
  1. The candidate must have published at least one paper emanating from the Master’s degree work or other scientific work or has produced equivalent scientific output;
  2. Working experience in health research or health care of at least 2 years after completion of internship;
  3. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  • Demonstrated ability to work under minimum supervision and meet tight deadline;
  • Commitment to working as part of a multidisciplinary research team; and
  1. Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

TERMS OF SERVICE:   

One year contract which may be renewed on the basis of performance and mutual     agreement.

 DUTY STATION:

The successful candidate will be based at NIMR Mwanza Centre and regularly visits at study sites.

  1. To do community mobilization and tracing of study participants from the community in Mwanza region;
  2. To transfer biological samples from the recruitment sites to the NIMR-Mwanza laboratory located at Isamilo; and

  1. A Bachelor Degree in community development or related field;
  2. Have two or more years of community work and in mobilization and follow-up of patients in clinical research settings;
