Job Title: Consultancy – Forestry and Sustainability expert Tanzania

CONTEXT
WeForest is fast growing international non-profit association with headquarters in Belgium and projects in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Tanzania, and Zambia. Our aim is to demonstrate, through the restoration of entire regions, that well-planned reforestation can be the solution to today’s biggest challenge: climate change. We promote Forest and Landscape Restoration best practices and have created a movement, engaging international brands and their millions of customers to act.
Our activities are growing and the organization is urgently looking for an experienced profile to further capacitate its Tanzanian team, and drive the project to the highest standards.
Tanzania programme WeForest has been active with reforestation and agroforestry in Tanzania since 2011 through a partnership with Global Resource Alliance (GRA). Our planting operations started in Kinesi and have been expanding to Butiama, Tarime and other districts in the Mara region. Currently, the project has worked with, provided training for, and delivered trees to more than 2,000 farmers and schools, planting over 1 million trees in the landscape. At the same time, the project is also supporting alternative, forest-friendly value chains and actively promotes efficient use of fuel wood.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The forestry and sustainability expert will be working closely with the present planting team, which is lead by GRA-Tanzania. The expert will:
Deliverable a) Logframe exercise & capacity assessment
  • Undertake a capacity assessment of the local planting team, as well as a review and update of existing training materials and protocols
  • Update and improve the project’s logical framework and sustainability strategy
Deliverable b) Strengthening project management
  • Provide direct support to the team through daily coaching in a) forestry, b) GIS and c) project management
  • Drive the project towards Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) best practices
  • Build link between nursery and recipients and assist documentation of socio economic benefits of project
  • Provide marketable communication material on a regular basis about the project’s progress
While the current project is the priority, the consultant is also expected to scope for expansion, through evaluation of other potential FLR projects in the areas.

DELIVERABLES
Under (a):
A.1 . Undertake a capacity assessment of the local planting team, including a review and update of existing materials
A.2. Develop a capacity building and knowledge retention plan
A.3. Update and improve the project’s logical framework and sustainability strategy document Under (b):
B.1. Further capacitation of the planting team through specific training and daily coaching
B.2. Improved customer / recipient distribution model
B.3. FLR-strategy
B.4. Regular communication material provided to WeForest on a monthly basis 

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • An M.Sc., or equivalent experience, in Forestry, Rural development, Agro-ecology or equivalent
  • A minimum of four years’ relevant work experience
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, and an ability to facilitate bottom-up processes, influence, coach and motivate others
  • Ability to work with stakeholders from different backgrounds
  • Experience in developing log frames & work plans, delivering projects against milestones and targets
  • Demonstrable skills: GIS, management, coordination, training and reporting skills
  • Fluent in English (both speaking and writing)
  • Knowledge of Swahili (speaking) would be considered a plus
  • Experience with agroforestry would be considered a plus
  • Experience working in Sub-Sahara Africa would be considered a plus
  • Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions

TERMS & CONDITIONS
Start date: Expected 15.01.2020
  • Duration of Contract: 2 months for deliverable a) and 4months for deliverable b) with the possibility of a short extension, to be considered based on performance and progress made: – January to February 2020: first phase of the consultant assignment
    • Mid March 2020: Based on the results of the logframe, confirmation of results and agreement for second phase of partnership
  • March to June 2020: second phase of the consultant assignment
  • Salary in line with NGO sector: Applicants to provide their expectation. Monthly payments based on submission of weekly reports and approval of timesheets by WeForest
  • Location: 100% in Tanzania. Predominantly in the Mara region, in the Kinesi, Butiama and Tarime district.
  • Visa: Please note that a work visa will be required for international applicants
  • Extras: relocation costs, covered at economy rate
  • Hours of Work: Full-time, working a minimum of 8 hours per day. Hours will however vary depending on project needs and flexibility is essential
  • Reporting line: The consultant will work under the supervision and report to WeForest Head of Global Programs
